Forth Bridge Memorials to the men who died constructing the bridge, and also to celebrate all Forth Bridge workers, are to be placed at South Queensferry and North Queensferry. The unveiling on 18th May 2012 will be attended by First Minister Alex Salmond. Network Rail and principal contractor, Balfour Beatty have backed a community plan to remember the men who lost their lives building the Forth Bridge as part of an event to celebrate the completion of a ten year restoration. Len Saunders from the Forth Bridge Memorial Committee commented:
Read our book, The Briggers, about the men who lived and died building the Forth Bridge with updated deaths lists. |
At its peak, the workforce constructing the Forth Railway Bridge reached a total of 4600 men or "Briggers" as they were known. They often worked in appalling conditions and had little safety equipment. The majority of the workers were British but many of the men working on the caissons foundations were Italian. There is no official record of those who died constructing the Forth Bridge and no memorial has been erected to them. Until recently, the death toll was thought to be 57 and few of their names were known. The Forth Bridge Memorial Committee has requested the Queensferry History Group to identify the names of the men so that they can be placed on a memorial befitting their sacrifice. The purpose of this site is to publish the list of names and any updates as this research continues. The site also provides contact details for anyone with additional names, corrections, or any other information that will help us in our quest to identify and verify the list of names of those who died.
