Briggers working on a foundation.

The Forth Railway Bridge Memorial research team has compiled a new list of those killed during the construction of the Forth Bridge by accessing and examining contemporary newspaper articles, genealogical records and family recollections. The careful analysis of this collected information has made it possible to determine the identity of the deceased and also if their deaths resulted from the construction of the bridge. The analysis and verification process is complicated by errors in the newspaper articles and in the genealogical records. Also, the precise criteria for inclusion in the list has still to be decided by the Memorial Committee. Present day criteria for inclusion may differ from those of Victorian construction managers who appear to have held different views on the causes of accidents from those of today.

The Lists below reflect the current state of the team's research. The first list of names covers those for whom there is an advanced level of verification. The second list of names covers those for whom there is doubt and further research is required to include or exclude them. The lists contain the errors and ambiguities uncovered during the research. These will be removed in the final analysis.

The research team would welcome any information from family descendant, historians or genealogists which would confirm, remove or correct the names. Any general information about the Briggers and their lives, or other sources of information would also be welcomed.
